Growth Audits: What They Reveal and Why They Matter
Most businesses don’t know where their growth is leaking. A growth audit finds it.
Every business I work with thinks they know their problems. “We need more traffic.” “Our conversion rate is low.” “We’re not ranking for the right keywords.” Sometimes they’re right. Usually, they’re looking at symptoms, not causes.
A growth audit cuts through assumptions and shows you exactly where opportunity exists, and where you’re bleeding money without realising it.
What a Growth Audit Actually Is
A growth audit isn’t a generic SEO report. It’s a systematic examination of every factor affecting your ability to acquire and convert customers online.
It covers:
- Technical foundation: Site speed, mobile experience, crawlability, indexing issues
- Visibility: Search rankings, keyword gaps, competitor positioning
- Conversion paths: User journeys, friction points, drop-off analysis
- Tracking integrity: Analytics accuracy, attribution setup, data quality
- Content effectiveness: What’s working, what’s missing, what’s cannibalising
- Competitive position: Where you’re winning, where you’re losing ground
The output isn’t a 50-page PDF that sits in a drawer. It’s a prioritised action plan with clear impact estimates.
The Rounding Errors That Kill Growth
Big problems are obvious. Everyone knows when the site is down or traffic drops 50%. It’s the small stuff that compounds into big losses.
Common Findings
- Broken tracking: 30% of conversions not attributed correctly, making all your data unreliable
- Missing meta descriptions: 200 pages with no descriptions, leaving Google to auto-generate (badly)
- Cannibalising content: Three pages competing for the same keyword, all ranking page 2 instead of one ranking page 1
- Mobile speed: 6-second load time on mobile killing 40% of your traffic before they see content
- Orphan pages: High-value content with no internal links, invisible to search engines
Real Example A client was spending £8,000/month on Google Ads with a reported 3x ROAS. The audit revealed their tracking was double-counting phone conversions. Actual ROAS was 1.4x. They were losing money on every click and didn’t know it.
The Five Audit Phases
Phase 1: Technical Health
Before anything else, we check if the foundation is solid:
- Core Web Vitals (LCP, FID, CLS)
- Mobile responsiveness
- SSL and security
- Crawl errors and indexing issues
- Site architecture and internal linking
- Schema markup implementation
Technical issues are the rounding errors that affect everything else. Fix these first.
Phase 2: Visibility Analysis
Where do you appear when people search? Where should you appear?
- Current keyword rankings and trends
- Keyword gaps vs competitors
- SERP feature opportunities (featured snippets, local pack, etc.)
- Backlink profile health
- Brand vs non-brand search split
Phase 3: Conversion Path Review
Traffic means nothing if it doesn’t convert:
- Landing page performance by source
- Form completion rates
- Exit points and drop-off analysis
- Call-to-action effectiveness
- Mobile vs desktop conversion gaps
Phase 4: Tracking Verification
Bad data leads to bad decisions:
- GA4 implementation accuracy
- Conversion tracking completeness
- Cross-domain tracking (if applicable)
- Attribution model appropriateness
- Data consistency across platforms
Phase 5: Competitive Positioning
Growth doesn’t happen in a vacuum:
- Competitor visibility comparison
- Content gap analysis
- Share of voice trends
- Competitive advantages to exploit

A growth audit produces three things:
- Current state score: A clear grade across technical, visibility, conversion, and competitive dimensions
- Prioritised action plan: What to fix first, second, third, based on impact and effort
- 12-month roadmap: How improvements sequence into sustained growth
No fluff. No vanity metrics. Just a clear picture of where you are and what to do about it.
Why Audits Before Strategy
Too many agencies jump straight to tactics. “You need more content.” “Let’s run some ads.” “We should be on TikTok.”
Without an audit, you’re guessing. You might spend six months creating content that competes with your own pages. Or running ads to a landing page that loads in 8 seconds on mobile.
The audit tells you where effort will actually produce results. It’s the difference between working hard and working smart.
What Happens After
An audit is the starting point, not the destination. It feeds into:
- Quick wins: Issues that can be fixed in days with immediate impact
- Foundation work: Technical fixes that enable everything else
- Growth initiatives: New content, new channels, new campaigns, now with data to support them
- Measurement framework: Proper tracking so you can see what’s working
Every engagement I run starts with an audit. Because you can’t build growth on a broken foundation.
